Overview

ViPER4Android & Dolby Atmos Coexistence (authored by LazyBug) resolves the longstanding architectural conflict between Android’s two most revered audio digital signal processing (DSP) suites: ViPER4Android FX and Dolby Atmos (Dolby Digital Plus / Dsplus).

On standard Android installations, running both engines concurrently is fraught with failure. Because both engines require direct registration in /vendor/etc/audio_effects.xml and /system/etc/audio_effects.conf, standard module installations inevitably replace each other’s configuration files. Furthermore, strict SELinux enforcement in modern Android versions denies the audioserver and hal_audio_default daemons permission to load third-party shared libraries (.so files) with executable memory mappings (execmod/execmem).

This coexistence module provides a unified distribution: both sets of native processing libraries, their respective user management APKs, a merged effect descriptor configuration, and live SELinux policy patching.

Technical Architecture & How It Works

1. Merged Audio Effects Descriptors

The module supplies a unified audio_effects.xml and audio_effects.conf that declare both processing engines side-by-side:

<!-- ViPER4Android FX Library Definition -->
<library name="v4a_fx" path="libv4a_fx.so"/>
<!-- Dolby Atmos / DS Plus Library Definition -->
<library name="dseffect" path="libdseffect.so"/>

<effects>
  <effect name="v4a_standard_fx" library="v4a_fx" uuid="41d3c04c-086e-4e2f-bee9-053c0f4f060f"/>
  <effect name="dap" library="dseffect" uuid="9d49200e-bbfd-4ad5-bb77-0002a5d5c51b"/>
</effects>

By defining both effects within a single file hierarchy, Android’s Audio Flinger initializes both processing filters in the active audio stream.

2. Automated SELinux Policy Injection

During post-fs-data, the module executes magiskpolicy --live commands to dynamically allow required capabilities:

# Allow audioserver and mediaserver to execute native library code
magiskpolicy --live "allow audioserver audioserver_tmpfs file { read write execute }"
magiskpolicy --live "allow audioserver system_file file { execmod }"
magiskpolicy --live "allow hal_audio_default hal_audio_default process { execmem }"
magiskpolicy --live "allow hal_audio_default hal_audio_default_tmpfs file { execute }"

This prevents the notorious “Driver not installed” prompt in ViPER4Android and allows the Dolby Atmos daemon to communicate with system audio sockets without triggering kernel audits or boot hangs.

  1. Uninstall Existing DSP Modules: Before flashing, remove any standalone ViPER4Android, Dolby, or Audio Modification Library (AML) modules to prevent stale file overrides.
  2. Flash and Reboot: Install the package via your root manager and restart your phone.
  3. App Setup:
    • Open ViPER4Android (ViPERFX) and grant notification and battery optimization exemptions.
    • Open Dolby Atmos (Dsplus) and select your preferred profile (Music, Movie, or Voice).
    • In ViPER4Android, enable Master Power and toggle Legacy Mode if your music player utilizes direct offload playback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do ViPER4Android and Dolby Atmos usually conflict when installed separately?

Both audio processing suites modify the system's primary audio HAL configuration (audio_effects.xml / audio_effects.conf). When installed as separate Magisk modules, one module's overlay completely overrides the other's, leaving one DSP engine without its declared library UUIDs. Furthermore, strict SELinux policies often block both drivers from accessing socket endpoints.

Can I use equalization and spatial effects from both engines simultaneously?

Yes. In the merged audio pipeline, audio streams pass through Dolby Atmos first (for spatial expansion, dialogue enhancement, and loudness equalization) and then through ViPER4Android FX (for convolver impulse responses, dynamic bass, and clarity tuning).
